ACTIVITY INFORMATION
TARGET AUDIENCE
Sleep specialists, including neurologists, psychiatrists, pulmonologists, respiratory specialists, sleep researchers, and other health care professionals whose focus is on treatment and diagnosis of sleep and comorbid neurological disorders.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The symposium will address restless legs syndrome (RLS) from both the patient’s perspective and the clinician’s perspective. Patients’ challenges will be illustrated through a video of a group meeting, and clinicians’ challenges will be demonstrated through case studies based on clinical practice. An Audience Response System will be used to maximize interactions between participants and the faculty of recognized opinion leaders.
EDUCATIONAL GOALS
This CME activity is intended to offer participants an opportunity to learn about the complex presentations of patients with restless legs syndrome, to identify appropriate treatment options, and to understand how best to manage cases involving augmentation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the activity, participants should be able to:
- Assess and manage the patient with psychiatric disorders and insomnia for the presence of RLS
- Determine what types of medications could cause or exacerbate RLS and identify more clinically beneficial alternatives
- Identify and manage augmentation in the patient with RLS being treated with dopaminergic medication
- Develop treatment approaches for patients with comorbid illnesses, such as kidney disease, that may complicate medical therapy
- Build a trusting therapeutic relationship and continuing dialogue with the RLS patient in order to optimize the patient’s symptom improvement and quality of life
- Recognize the clinical types of RLS and how to manage the refractory patient
